• This class is applicable to Oracle8i, Oracle9i and Oracle Database 10g users.• This course introduces students to PL/SQL and helps them understand the benefits of this powerful programming language. In the class, students learn to create PL/SQL blocks of application code that can be shared by multiple forms, reports, and data management applications.• Students learn to create anonymous PL/SQL blocks, stored procedures, and functions. They learn about declaring variables and trapping exceptions. Students will also learn to develop stored procedures, functions, packages and database triggers. Students will learn to manage PL/SQL program units manage dependencies, manipulate large objects, and use some of the Oracle-supplied packages. Students use iSQL*Plus to develop these program units. Demonstrations and hands-on practice reinforce the fundamental concepts.• This course counts towards the Hands-on course requirement for the Oracle Database 10g Administrator Certification. Only instructor-led inclass or instructor-led online formats of this course will meet the Certification Hands-on Requirement. Self-Study CD-Rom and Knowledge Center courses are excellent study and reference tools but DO NOT meet the Hands-on Requirement for certification.

This course is designed for application developers with basic SQL language skills. In this course, students learn to control privileges at the object and system level. This course covers creating indexes and constraints and altering existing schema objects. Students also learn to create and query external tables and use the advanced features of SQL to query and manipulate data within the database. Students learn to use the dictionary views to retrieve metadata and create reports about their schema objects. Students learn some of the date time functions available in the Oracle 11g Database and use the regular expression support in SQL. In this course, students use Oracle SQL Developer as the main tool and SQL*Plus is introduced as an optional tool. This course counts towards the Hands-on course requirement for the Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certification. Only instructor-led in class or instructor-led online formats of this course will meet the Certification Hands-on Requirement. Self-Study CD-ROM and Knowledge Center courses DO NOT meet the Hands-on Requirement. This is appropriate for a 10g audience too. There are few minor changes between 10g and 11g features.Learn To:• Control database access to specific objects• Manage schema objects and use data dictionary views• Manipulate large data sets in the Oracle database by using subqueries• Manage data in different time zones• Retrieve data by using advanced subqueries• Use the regular expression support in SQL to search, match, and replace strings in terms of regular expressions

The course starts with an unknown database that requires tuning. The lessons will proceed through the steps a DBA willperform to acquire the information needed to identify problem areas, to diagnose common problems, and remedy thoseproblems. The methodology used in the practices is primarily reactive. After configuring monitoring tools, and reviewingthe available reports, the student will be presented with the Oracle architecture based on the SQL statement processingof SELECT and DML.The SQL tuning section assumes that the DBA has little or no ability to change the code. The DBA will influence theSQL performance with available tools. The DBA will be introduced to various methods of identifying the SQL statementsthat require tuning, and the diagnostic tools needed to find ways to change the performance. This will include the use ofstatistics, outlines, and profiles to influence the optimizer, adding and rebuilding indexes, and using the SQL Advisors. Amajor task of DBA’s is to maintain SQL performance across changes. This course introduces the DB Replay, and SQLPerformance Analyzer tools to help the DBA test and minimize the impact of change.Instance tuning uses the same general method of observing a problem, diagnosing the problem, and implementing asolution. The instance tuning lessons cover the details of major tunable components and describe how you caninfluence the instance behavior. For each lesson, we will examine the relevant components of the architecture. The class only discusses the architecture to the level required to understand the symptoms and solutions. More detailedexplanations are left to other courses, reference material, and the Oracle documentation. The last lesson of this course is a recap of the best practices discovered in the previous lessons, and miscellaneousrecommendations. The goal is to finish the course with a best practices list for students to take away.Learn To:Describe Oracle tuning methodologyUse Oracle supplied tools for monitoring, and diagnosing SQL and Instance tuning issuesUse database advisors to correct performance problems proactivelyIdentify problem SQL statements & tune SQL performance problemsMonitor the Instance Performance using Enterprise ManagerTune instance components, primarily using Instance parameters
